MAC Art Supplies Greasepaint Sticks Review

Greasepaint sticks have come out in a couple of previous collections from last year, but I missed out on them because I was behaving and was on a super low buy all of last year. When I heard there were a bunch of new colours being launched with the Art Supplies collection, I was excited to get the chance to pick some up this time around.

Here's what the MAC website says about Greasepaint Sticks:
"A smooth and creamy black eye crayon with an opalescent sparkle finish specially formulated for maximum drama. Easily provides ultra-high-level coverage. Versatile. Use as a soft but intense liner or blend out to create a smoke-like shadow. Long-wearing. Transfer and water-resistant. Limited edition."

I wasn't sure how much I'd like them, so I only picked up 2 to start out with. I got Below Ground and Dirty.

Below Ground, Dirty

Dirty, Below Ground

They all come with a sharpener on the end.

These remind me of shadesticks, but creamier and easier to apply. I find with shadesticks, they can sometimes tug at the lid, but that isn't the case with these. I played around with both colours over the weekend and let me tell you, I am in love! Greasepaint sticks make it so easy to create and amazing smokey eye! I just apply over my lid and blend out into my crease. I find it's easiest to blend really well and create the shape you will want with your eye shadow, and then apply your shadow and you're pretty much done. The way I blended everything out, I didn't even really need to use a crease colour, just a highlight and it looked fab.

I really like Below Ground, it will work for a subtle smokey eye, or even just a neutral every day look depending on what you put over it.

I like these so much that I am very tempted to go back for more. I'm thinking Charred Mauve and Zinc Zone. Brown, Now and Uniformly Blue are really pretty too...

As much as I liked the Pearlglides that came out with Art Supplies, I tried to convince myself that I don't really need them and won't use those colours on a regular basis. Undercurrent is a really gorgeous colour though.

I wasn't too interested in the Lipstain Markers. They don't seem to be getting great reviews and I already have a million lip products! There are a few colours I thought were nice though, especially Stylesetter.

Did you get anything from this collection? What do you think of Greasepaint Sticks?

  1. Do you blend out with your finger? That's what I do, just curious what others do. =)

PS I have Charred Mauve, Zinc Zone and Dirty. I've played with Zinc Zone and I think it's worth picking up =p I didn't get Uniformly Blue because I have B from a previous collection

  2. Ohh so pretty - I might have to pick a couple up. I love layering shadows over liners and if it gives you a quick smokey eye then even better!

  3. I totally agree with what you say. I aboslutely adore Below Ground and it makes me wanna get more!!! I'm thinking Greengrease, Charred Mauve, and Zinc Zone.

And I might have to pick up a backup for Below Ground because it is fabbbbbb...

  4. Cool! I hd no idea they had a built in sharpener, uber useful!

  5. I got Below Ground -- makes for the easiest day smoky eye! I just apply it all over the lid then blend out with MAC 217. There's no need for other products if you're really in a hurry.

I picked up Undercurrent too and was AMAZED at how creamy it was. Creamier than UD pencils. How is that even possible?

I don't think I'm going to pick up any more. I'm sure these will come back at some point or another, and this is plenty of product to work with. They are both lovely though!

  6. I am so glad you reviewed those b/c those are 2 of the 3 I ordered (but haven't picked em up yet!). Anyways yay they are so pretty!

  7. I would love to see an eye look you create using these! Great review :)

  8. I really want Dirty Greasepaint Stick. I got four of the Pearlglide liners and I LOVE them! They are so pretty! :-)

  9. @Nymphette - Yeah, I just blend out with my finger. I can't believe how easy these are to use, I love them!

@Makeup-Junkie - You should get take a look at them, they're great!

@Rica - Below Ground is so pretty and versatile, definitely could be backup worthy!

@Niki - Yeah, I think the sharpener will definitely come in handy!

@Arianne - I caved and picked up Undercurrent too, it's just too pretty not to have hehe. :)

@Abby Q. - I hope you love them as much as I do when you get them! I went and picked up a couple more colours, I just loved these 2 so much.

@XOXO, Deanna - Thanks, glad you liked the review! :)

@LipGlossGossip - The pearlglide liners are really pretty I did end up getting one - Undercurrent. It's gorgeous!

  10. Thanks for the swatches, I really like these colors. :) When I do a smokey eye makeup, browns are the kind of shades that I like to use. :) I think I will probably buy these too on my next trip to Germany, because here MAC is not available:D
